Abstract
Recent paper presents the results of an empirical research on the environmental policy and environmental consciousness of local governments in Hungary. The paper seeks out that the legal regulation in Hungary is Europeanised, however there are several gap to bridge in environmental policy implementation. Local governments are rating compulsory environmental issues at the back in their tasks; the liveability of settlements is decreasing parallel with the size of the settlements; 90% of the settlements have recycling. The paper concludes by arguing that improvement of the environmental attitude in local governments is essential, and investments relating to environmental policy implementation should overstep the “compulsory level”, endogen initiations are needed.
