Abstract
Covering a longer period of time, we have briefly described modernisation efforts of various magnitude and importance concerning villages and farms in Hungary. The issue of "standard" was present in all endeavours, thus the consideration of how to make a declared goal or category more common. The state was more successful in this process by providing substantial financial resources to the model of population resettlement as well as to the development of a school system at farm level. Tordas, a cooperative model village was not ahead of its time, but represented a special case, a successful experiment ot'rural modernization in Hungary in the first half of the 20'1' Century. It depended neither on the people of Tordas nor on the "HANGYA" movement that this model could not become a mass example. Cooperative model villages of the state-socialist period were shaped by other values.
