Abstract
The development of information and communication technologies (ICTs) has created favourable conditions for the emergence of the sharing economy, where users can share their idle resources with each other. One of the most well-known elements of the sharing economy is Airbnb, which is an online platform for short-term rentals. Airbnb has a significant influence on urban property and rental markets, and thus its diffusion has led to conflicts between various actors. Our aim is to outline the characteristics of Airbnb, and to examine how it works and what kinds of dilemmas and conflicts emerge in relation to the proliferation of short-term rental. Furthermore, we aim to understand the extent to which Airbnb can be interpreted as a part of the sharing economy. Is it genuinely a sharing of idle resources, or is it a new form of capitalist enterprise? We also briefly present the intra-urban spatial pattern of Airbnb in Budapest. In addition, we pose a few theoretical considerations for future analyses.
